There is something fascinating about music that blurs the boundary between the organic and the electronic, and “Salvus” by The Voice of Ygg does exactly that. Built around a striking combination of traditional percussion and carefully spatialised electronic sounds, the track feels simultaneously ancient and futuristic. Even more intriguing is the fact that its electronic material originates from the sonification of Salvia officinalis (common sage) 🤯🤩
The result is an unusually immersive piece of experimental electronic music. Rather than simply attempting to imitate the sounds of nature, The Voice of Ygg allows biological activity to become part of the compositional process itself. The project uses biosonification technology to capture tiny changes in electrical conductivity across the leaves of living plants, converting those biological signals into MIDI data that can subsequently be shaped into musical compositions.
“Salvus” was actually the track that led me to explore the rest of The Voice of Ygg’s Synthoid Naturae Digitalis, and discovering the album proved to be a rewarding experience. Released in April 2026, the eight-track record expands the same idea across a broader sonic landscape, combining biological data with electronic production, ambient textures, glitch-like rhythms and experimental sound design.
What impressed me most is how naturally The Voice of Ygg's unusual source material translates into sophisticated electronic music. There is an appealing paradox at the heart of the project: some of the sounds are generated from the most organic source imaginable, yet the finished compositions can feel distinctly synthetic, futuristic and otherworldly.
The Voice of Ygg also has a remarkably coherent identity. The project describes its central character, Ygg, as a cyber-plant or hybrid machine-plant entity whose roots and branches are imagined as electrical wires - a concept inspired by Yggdrasil, the world tree of Norse mythology. Mark S., the project's creator, combines composition and bass playing with the technical process behind the biosonification system.
This makes Synthoid Naturae Digitalis more than an experiment in converting plant data into sound. It is an attempt to imagine what happens when biological systems become collaborators in electronic music production.
For listeners drawn to experimental electronics, IDM, electroacoustic music and unconventional sound design, “Salvus” is a particularly intriguing entry point. It is energetic, detailed and full of strange sonic transformations, but beneath all the digital complexity there is something remarkably organic happening.
The Voice of Ygg has created a fascinating musical language where plants, circuitry, synthesis and rhythm coexist. Synthoid Naturae Digitalis is well worth exploring. Especially if you're looking for electronic music that genuinely sounds like it came from somewhere you haven't heard before.
